Former Attorney General William Barr believes the decision by the Colorado Supreme Court to disqualify former President Donald Trump from holding office again could backfire.

During an interview on CNN on Wednesday, Barr noted he “strongly” opposes the 45th president’s re-election bid.

However, he blasted the court’s decision:

“I think that this case is legally wrong and untenable. And I think that this kind of action of stretching the law, taking these hyper-aggressive positions to try to knock Trump out of the race are counter-productive, they backfire.”

Watch the video below:

Former Attorney General Bill Barr says the Colorado Supreme Court's “hyper-aggressive” ruling to disqualify Donald Trump from the 2024 ballot is “counterproductive”:

Finally, Barr said, “He feeds on grievance, just like a fire feeds on oxygen. This is going to end up as a grievance that helps him.”

On Tuesday, Colorado’s Supreme Court ruled Trump is ineligible to hold office again.

The ruling applies only to Colorado’s ballots and was paused until Jan. 4, the day before the state’s secretary of state has to certify candidates for the primary.

CBS News noted all the justices on the court were appointed by Democratic governors.

“We conclude that because President Trump is disqualified from holding the office of President under Section Three, it would be a wrongful act under the Election Code for the Secretary to list President Trump as a candidate on the presidential primary ballot,” the majority’s opinion stated.

It added, “Therefore, the Secretary may not list President Trump’s name on the 2024 presidential primary ballot, nor may she count any write-in votes cast for him.”
