House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan lost a third attempt to become the next Speaker of the House after failing to receive enough votes.

On Friday, the House held its third ballot for speaker. The House has been without a speaker since eight Republicans joined with the Democrats to vote Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) out of the position.

Jordan received 194 votes, with 25 Republicans voting against him, while House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) received 210 votes.

On Tuesday, the House held its first round of voting for a new Speaker of the House, with Jordan losing as 20 Republicans voted against him.

A second round of voting was held on Wednesday, with Jordan receiving 199 votes with Jeffries receiving 212 votes.

Prior to the third round of voting, Jordan stressed the House had “important work to do.”

“We’ve got important work to do. We need to help Israel,” Jordan said. “We need to get the appropriations process moving so that the key elements of our government are funded.”

Jordan added that the “plan this weekend is to get a speaker elected to the House of Representatives as soon as possible.”
