Four people were left injured as a result of a shooting that happened early Sunday morning at a party at a university in Alabama.

Two students from Tuskegee University and two visitors were among the people who were shot at an “unauthorized” party on campus around 12:48 a.m. Sunday, according to a press release from Frank Lee, director of Macon County Emergency Management Agency (MCEMA).

One of the visitors was treated for life-threatening injuries, while the other was treated and released from a local hospital. The university confirmed that two students had also been injured trying to leave the party.

“The Macon County Sheriffs office and Tuskegee Police Department were immediately dispatched to assist Tuskegee University Police in regard to possible shots fired, mutual aid responded promptly and accordingly” Lee wrote in the statement.

Tuskegee University President Charlotte Morris wrote in a statement on Facebook that all classes would be canceled on Monday in order to allow students to take a mental health day.

“In light of this weekend’s incident, all classes will be canceled on Monday, Sept. 25th, to allow students to take time to focus on their wellbeing and reach out to the Counseling Center as needed,” Morris wrote. “I extend my thanks to the Student Government Association for their collaboration in establishing the Mental Health Day.”

Mechel Winters, a freshman student at the university who had attended the party when the shooting occurred, told WAFF, “There was no sense of trouble until we actually heard the first gunshot,” adding the first shot acted as a sort of “warning.”

“Nobody really knew what was going on,” Winters told the outlet. “I just expected it to be a safe place because we are on campus, and there should be security measures in place.”

The shooting is currently under investigation and no arrests have been made.

“We encourage anyone who might have seen something to please contact your local law enforcement agency,” Lee wrote in another press release early Monday.

IJR reached out to Lee for a statement but did not receive a response by the time of publication.
