A House Democrat found one of her colleague’s analogies during a hearing on gender-affirming care for children so offensive she apologized.

On Thursday, Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas) apologized to one of the witnesses and a mother of a transgender child as she said, “One of my Republican colleagues made some really demeaning and belittling comments meant to humiliate and minimize the parents of trans children by comparing the very difficult, painful journey and conversation with children about transitioning to allowing kids to eat ice cream all day every day.”

“So I want to apologize on behalf of what happened,” she added.

Earlier in the hearing, Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas) made an analogy to argue children are not mature enough to make decisions about transitioning genders.

“This is the food pyramid according to my 4-year-old and my 2-year-old daughters,” Hunt said as he gestured to a graphic of the food pyramid but with ice cream in every food group.

He continued:

“If my children had their way, they would have ice cream for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and for every single meal in between. Oh, the wisdom of children. But in a sane country we know that children aren’t mature enough to make adult decisions that will impact the rest of their lives, that’s why we have parents.”

Hunt added, “Children cry for ice cream, but as parents, we have the wisdom to know that ice cream is not in their best interest, particularly their long-term interest.”

Hunt also noted he and his two siblings went to West Point and earned master’s degrees.

“Do you know why? Because my parents did not give in to the thoughts of an adolescent Wesley Hunt. I am a United States congressman because my parents didn’t listen to me when I was eight years old, they raised us, they cared for us, they taught us the way of being successful people,” he said.
