Trial Date Set for Bragg’s Criminal Case Against Trump

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - APRIL 13: Former U.S. President Donald Trump arrives at Trump Tower following a deposition at the office of the New York Attorney General Letitia James on April 13, 2023 in New York City. Trump is being deposed for a civil lawsuit brought by the attorney general over allegations the Trump Organization falsified financial statements in order to obtain loans. The lawsuit seeks to remove Trump and his children from their roles in the organization and ban them from future leadership roles in the state of New York and repay $250 million that was allegedly obtained illegally. The trial date for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s (D) criminal case against former President Donald Trump has been set.

On Tuesday, Judge Juan Merchan revealed he set the trial date for March 25, 2024.

The date is notable as it is in the midst of the 2024 Republican presidential primary season.

Merchan reportedly read Trump, who appeared virtually during the hearing, an order limiting what he can say publicly about the case.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Just had New York County Supreme Court hearing where I believe my First Amendment Rights,’Freedom of Speech,’ have been violated, and they forced upon us a trial date of March 25th, right in the middle of Primary season.”

“Very unfair, but this is exactly what the Radical Left Democrats wanted. It’s called ELECTION INTERFERENCE, and nothing like this has ever happened in our Country before!!!” he added.

On Wednesday morning, he wrote simply, “ELECTION INTERFERENCE!!!”

In March, a grand jury in New York City voted to indict Trump in Bragg’s investigation into hush money payments made in 2016.

The indictment included 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, and Trump entered a plea of not guilty.

In a statement after the news of his indictment, the former president said, “This is Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history.”

“From the time I came down the golden escalator at Trump Tower, and even before I was sworn in as your President of the United States, the Radical Left Democrats – the enemy of the hard-working men and women of this Country – have been engaged in a Witch-Hunt to destroy the Make America Great Again movement,” he continued.

He claimed, “The Democrats have lied, cheated and stolen in their obsession with trying to ‘Get Trump,’ but now they’ve done the unthinkable – indicting a completely innocent person in an act of blatant Election Interference.”

The hearing in Bragg’s case came the same day The Wall Street Journal reported Special Counsel Jack Smith is nearing the end of his investigation into Trump’s handling of classified documents.

According to the Journal, the former president’s aides are preparing for Smith to indict him as well. However, the paper noted it has not determined if Smith has decided to charge Trump or if he shared a recommendation with Attorney General Merrick Garland.
