The 2024 Republican presidential primary field is growing.

On Thursday evening, conservative radio host Larry Elder announced his plans to run for the Republican presidential nomination.

“My announcement, Tucker, is I’m announcing that I’m running for the presidency of the United States on your program,” he said during an appearance on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

Elder went on to explain he feels he has a “moral, religious, and a patriotic duty” to run for president as a way to give back to the country.

He went on to list the situation at the southern border and crime as two issues that inspired him to run for president.

Elder also insisted, “We’ve incentivized women to marry the government. We’ve incentivized men to abandon their financial and moral responsibility.”

“And if I do nothing else in this race, but focus people on those two issues, I would perform a service to my country,” he added.

Elder challenged California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) in 2021.

Newsom wound up defeating the recall effort by more than 60%.

Elder will join a presidential primary field that includes former President Donald Trump, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and businessman Perry Johnson.

There are several others who are seen as potential candidates including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), former Vice President Mike Pence, and Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.).

Polls currently appear to show Trump is the favorite to win the nomination.

Meanwhile, FiveThirtyEight’s polling aggregator shows DeSantis appears to be the strongest contender to Trump.

Whoever wins the nomination will likely face President Joe Biden in the general election.

While Biden has not officially announced his reelection campaign, he has stated he plans to. And ABC News notes he is only facing “nominal primary challengers.”
