Pelosi Claims Opposing Abortion Is ‘Sinful’

WASHINGTON, DC - AUGUST 12: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) talks to reporters during her weekly news conference ahead of the vote on the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 at the U.S. Capitol on August 12, 2022 in Washington, DC. Despite not achieving everything the House Democrats wanted, the $737 billion act will focus on slowing climate change, lower health care costs and creating clean energy jobs by enacting a 15% corporate minimum tax, a 1% fee on stock buybacks and enhancing IRS enforcement. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) went after opponents of abortion, accusing them of being “sinful.”

Pelosi made the comment during the Roundtable on Women’s Reproductive Health at the University of California San Francisco Mission Bay Campus.

“The fact that this is such an assault on women of color and women – lower income families is just sinful.  It’s sinful,” Pelosi said.

She added, “It’s wrong that they would be able to say to women what they think women should be doing with their lives and their bodies. But it’s sinful, the injustice of it all.”

Additionally, during the event, Pelosi claimed that “American women are not as free as their mothers and their grandmothers were.”

In May, the Roman Catholic archbishop of San Francisco directed priests to deny Pelosi communion because of her support for a woman’s right to abortion.

Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone tweeted, “After numerous attempts to speak with Speaker Pelosi to help her understand the grave evil she is perpetrating, the scandal she is causing, an the danger to her own soul she is risking, I have determined that she is not to be admitted to Holy Communion.”

Still, Pelosi received communion during her meeting with Pope Francis in June.

“Faith is an important gift, not everyone has it but it is the path to so many other things,” Pelosi said while speaking to a crowd of ambassadors, Vatican officials and others.

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) was also present at the event last week.

She identifies as Catholic.

“The fact that we have a government now on a federal level that is mandating pregnancy — government-mandated pregnancy — flies in the face of every personal freedom on which our country is founded,” Speier said during the event.

The event comes just months after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
