Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) was given another chance to address Americans who paid off all their student loans as President Joe Biden is taking action to cancel debt for millions of borrowers.

During an appearance on CNN on Wednesday, the Massachusetts senator was asked how she would respond to Americans who paid off their student loans and feel that they are bailing out others.

She responded by calling student loan debt a “part of our country,” as she suggested canceling student loans is an investment in Americans.

“What the data show us, is that because of student loan debt, there are many people who don’t move out of their momma’s basement, who can’t save up money to buy a home, who don’t start small businesses, who don’t start a family,” Warren said.

She continued, “You relieve the debt burden some for those people, and we have more economic activity. In other words, canceling student loan debt is good for the people whose student loan debt is canceled. But it is also good for our economy and the rest of America.”

Warren has previously been confronted about her calls to cancel student loan debt.

In Jan. 2020, while she was running for president, a man confronted her at a campaign stop and asked, “My daughter is getting out of school. I’ve saved all my money. She doesn’t have any student loans. Am I going to get my money back?”

“Of course not,” Warren responded.

The man then asked, “So you’re going to pay for people who didn’t save any money and those of us who did the right thing get screwed.”

He went on:

“My buddy had fun, bought a car, and went on all the vacations, I saved my money. He makes more than I did. I worked a double shift.”

Finally, he claimed Warren was “laughing at me.” When she denied that was the case, he said, “Yeah, that’s exactly what you’re doing. We did the right thing and we get screwed.”

Warren’s exchange on CNN comes after Biden announced he is taking action to cancel up to $10,000 in student loans per borrower, as IJR reported.
