A teacher who was killed during the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, made a phone call during her final moments.

Fourth-grade teacher Eva Mireles was in her classroom when the shooting occurred at Robb Elementary School, killing her, another teacher, and 19 students, according to People.

As the gunman was shooting, Mireles called her husband, Ruben Ruiz, who was a school district police officer and on the scene that day.

Ruiz was prohibited by other police officers from entering the building.

“She’s in the classroom and he’s outside. It’s terrifying,” Uvalde County Judge Bill Mitchell said, according to the New York Times.

Mitchell also told reporters that he does not know exactly what was said during the phone call but that “the general topic was that the gunman was already on the attack,” according to People.

“He’s outside hearing his wife: ‘I’m dying,” Mitchell said of Ruiz.

Mireles’ friend and DPS trooper, Juan Maldonado, was also called to the scene the day of the shooting and went to be with her, according to KSAT.

“It was an honor to spend the last moment with Eva as she left this Earth to go to a greater place,” Maldonado said.

Continuing, he said, “Eva is a fighter, and she did everything she could to protect her babies, and that’s her students. So, we know she did everything she could, and she protected them until her last breath.”

For the believer, Philippians 3:20-21 says, “But our citizenship is in Heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to Himself.”

In an online obituary for Mireles written by her family it reads, “Her smile and personality never went unnoticed as when she was around, it was never a dull moment. She was an outstanding wife, mom, daughter, sister, friend, and educator. Eva will forever live on in our hearts and memories.”

Mireles was a teacher for 17 years.
