Attendees at the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) Annual Leadership Forum will not be allowed to carry firearms during former President Donald Trump’s speech.

NPR reported the NRA said the Secret Service on Friday will be “taking control of the hall during Trump’s speech and is prohibiting attendees from having firearms, firearms accessories, and knives.”

Additionally, attendees will not be allowed to carry ammunition, laser pointers, pepper spray, toy guns, backpacks and other items.

The NRA also said the Secret Service will examine attendees with magnetometers before entering the hall, as NPR reported.

The outlet noted a similar ban was put in place during then-Vice President Mike Pence’s speech in 2018.

The Secret Service told the outlet at the time the agency has the “authority to preclude firearms from entering sites visited by our protectees, including those located in open-carry states.”

The forum will come just days after a gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, killing 19 children and two teachers.

The NRA issued a statement following the shooting.

“Our deepest sympathies are with the families and victims involved in this horrific and evil crime,” the organization said.

It added, “On behalf of our members, we salute the courage of school officials, first responders and others who offered their support and services.”

The statement continues, “Although an investigation is underway and facts are still emerging, we recognize this was the act of a lone, deranged criminal.”

The organization explained that as it gathers in Houston, “we will reflect on these events, pray for the victims, recognize our patriotic members, and pledge to redouble our commitment to making our schools secure.”

According to the organization’s website, admission to the event is free but it is first-come, first-served and individuals must be a member of the NRA to attend.

Nine people will deliver remarks during Friday’s meeting.
