President Joe Biden reacted to Russia’s attack on Ukraine, calling it “unprovoked and unjustified.”

Biden said in a statement, “The prayers of the entire world are with the people of Ukraine tonight as they suffer an unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces. President Putin has chosen a premeditated war that will bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering.”

He added, “Russia alone is responsible for the death and destruction this attack will bring, and the United States and its Allies and partners will respond in a united and decisive way. The world will hold Russia accountable.”

Biden also warned the United States will “coordinate with our NATO Allies to ensure a strong, united response that deters any aggression against the Alliance.”

Additionally, Biden issued a statement following his call with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine on Wednesday night.

“I briefed him on the steps we are taking to rally international condemnation, including tonight at the United Nations Security Council,” Biden said.

He added, “He asked me to call on the leaders of the world to speak out clearly against President Putin’s flagrant aggression, and to stand with the people of Ukraine.”

The president made it clear the country will “continue to provide support and assistance to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.”

According to CNN, Biden is meeting with G7 leaders to discuss “their joint response” to Russia’s attack.

Zelensky enacted martial law in his country, as the outlet reported.

He said in a Facebook message, “Putin began war against Ukraine, against the entire democratic world. He wants to destroy my country, our country, everything we’ve been building, everything we are living for.”

The Russian military claimed it was not targeting cities in Ukraine, suggesting the “civilian population is not at risk.”

CNN noted other countries have condemned the attacks.
