ATF Urges Public to Share Information About Exes Participating in ‘Illegal Gun Activity’

LOS ANGELES, CA - MAY 31: Surrendered handguns are piled in a bin during a gun buyback event that was announced by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti in the wake of a killing spree at University of California, Santa Barbara that left six students dead, on May 31, 2014 in Los Angeles, California. People can exchange their firearms with no questions asked at four Los Angles-area locations for Ralphs supermarket gift cards ranging from $100 to $200 per weapon. The buyback program first took place in Los Angles in 2009 as part of the Gang Reduction and Youth Development program to reduce the number of guns on the streets. The last buyback resulted in more than 1,500 firearms being turned in. (David McNew/Getty Images)

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives sent a Valentine’s Day message to the public about their exes.

“Valentine’s Day can still be fun even if you broke up. Do you have information about a former (or current) partner involved in illegal gun activity?” the agency tweeted.

It continued, “Let us know, and we will make sure it’s a Valentine’s Day to remember! Call 1-888-ATF-TIPS or email ATFTips@atf.gov.”

Former spokesperson for the National Rifle Association Dana Loesch fired back at the agency on Twitter.

“What if it’s your own government for a gun-running op called Fast and Furious? Weren’t you guys involved in that?” Loesch tweeted.

In September 2021, Biden withdrew his pick to lead the ATF amid opposition from gun rights groups, Republicans, and some Democrats.

The president said in a statement, “[David Chipman] would have been an exemplary Director of the ATF and would have redoubled its efforts to crack down on illegal firearms traffickers and help keep our communities safe from gun violence.”

He added, “Unfortunately, Republicans in Congress have made clear that they intend to use gun crime as a political talking point instead of taking serious steps to address it.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) celebrated the news.

“Glad to hear reports the White House is taking my advice and pulling the terrible nomination of David Chipman,” McConnell said.

He continued, “Absurd that a vocal opponent of Americans’ constitutional rights was ever picked to run ATF. This is a win for the Second Amendment and law-abiding American citizens.”

Earlier this month, Biden made a stop at NYPD headquarters for a Gun Violence Strategies Partnership meeting.

“Every day in this country, 316 people are shot, 106 are killed and six NYPD officers have been victims of gun violence so far just this year … 64 children injured by gun violence so far this year, 26 killed. So enough. Enough is enough because we know we can do things about this,” Biden said.
