Trump Blames Jan. 6 Committee for Cancellation of His Press Conference

CULLMAN, ALABAMA - AUGUST 21: Former U.S. President Donald Trump addresses supporters during a "Save America" rally at York Family Farms on August 21, 2021 in Cullman, Alabama. With the number of coronavirus cases rising rapidly and no more ICU beds available in Alabama, the host city of Cullman declared a COVID-19-related state of emergency two days before the Trump rally. According to the Alabama Department of Public Health, 67.5% of the state's population has not been fully vaccinated. (Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

Former President Donald Trump is canceling the press conference he scheduled for the one-year anniversary of the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

“In light of the total bias and dishonesty of the January 6 Unselect Committee of Democrats, two failed Republicans, and the Fake News Media, I am canceling the January 6th Press Conference at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday, and instead will discuss many of those important topics at my rally on Saturday, January 15, in Arizona — It will be a big crowd!” Trump said in a statement.

He called the committee the “Great Cover-Up Committee,” asking, “Why did Adam’ Shifty’ Schiff forge and change the statement of Congressman Jim Jordan without any consequence? Why will Crazy Nancy Pelosi not provide her communications with the House Sergeant-at-Arms and the House Chief Administrative Officer, or promise to retain these vital messages, which many feel she has already destroyed — perhaps illegally?”

Trump continued, “Also, why is the primary reason for the people coming to Washington D.C., which is the fraud of the 2020 Presidential Election, not the primary topic of the Unselect Committee’s investigation?”

Two of the former president’s allies suggested he should not hold a press conference on the anniversary of the riot.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) told Axios he discussed the issue with Trump over the weekend. According to Graham, he told Trump, “There could be peril in doing a news conference. … Best to focus on election reform instead.”

As Axios notes, Fox News host Laura Ingraham indicated she thought Trump should not hold the press conference.

She asked Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) during her show on Monday night, “Some things were horrific that happened and shouldn’t have happened that day. … Is it smart for President Trump to do a rally on that particular day, versus next week or the week before?”

Banks said he is “looking forward” to hearing what Trump had to say.

Trump was expected to talk about the 2020 election and speak out against the committee’s investigation into January 6.
