Former Vice President Mike Pence is opening up about his relationship with former President Donald Trump in the days following the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, saying they “talked through all of it.”

Fox News’s Sean Hannity noted “a lot has been made” over the disagreement Pence had with the former president over the attack.

He asked Pence, “What is your relationship with the president?”

Pence responded, “Look, you can’t spend almost five years in a political foxhole with somebody without developing a strong relationship. January 6 was a tragic day in the history of our Capitol building but thanks to the efforts of Capitol Hill police, federal officials, the Capitol was secured.”

He continued, “We finished our work. And the president and I sat down a few days later and talked through all of it. I can tell you that we parted amicably at the end of the administration.”

The former vice president also told Hannity he has spoken with Trump “a number of times” since leaving office.

Pence accused the media of distracting “from the Biden administration’s failed agenda by focusing on one day in January. They want to use that one day to try and demean the character and intentions of 74 million Americans who believed we could be strong again and prosperous again and supported our administration in 2016 and 2020.”

In July, Trump mentioned Pence’s decision not to overturn the results of the 2020 election, as IJR previously reported.

“I only wish that my friend, Mike Pence, had that additional courage…” Trump said during a speech. The crowd booed Pence while Trump did not attempt to defend him.

He added, “To send the results back to the legislatures because it all happened so quickly. You know, they schemed on this plan for four years. This all happened so quickly. If he would have sent it back to the legislatures. Somebody gave him bad advice.”

During a speech at the Hillsborough County Republican Committee’s Lincoln-Reagan Dinner in New Hampshire in June, Pence said he does not know if he and Trump will ever see “eye to eye” on January 6.

He continued, “But I will always be proud of what we accomplished for the American people over the last four years.”
