Former Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Tom Perez is running for governor of Maryland.

In Perez’s video, it highlights former President Barack Obama calling him “one of the best secretaries of labor in our history.” Obama also called him “tireless,” “wicked smart,” and “extraordinary.” It also highlights his life as a son of immigrants.

Maryland votes Democratic in presidential elections but has a Republican governor. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) is term-limited and cannot run again.

As NBC News notes, Perez has “widespread name recognition, connections to national donors and some key local endorsements.”

There are several other Democrats who are running for governor of Maryland in 2022, including former Education Secretary John King Jr.

Perez served as the head of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division during the Obama administration. He then served as secretary of Labor.

He then was the chair of the DNC up until earlier this year. Jaime Harrison — who ran for Senate in 2020 — became the next chair of the DNC.
