Maxine Waters: Trump and His Campaign ‘Must Be Investigated’ for Any Role in Capitol Riot

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) is calling for an investigation into what she believes is former President Donald Trump and his campaign's involvement in the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6.

"Logged on to Twitter only to see that my haters have me trending again! Does the truth make you that mad? I’ll say it again: Trump and his campaign must be investigated for the January 6th insurrection. Follow the money!" Waters tweeted on Sunday night.

She continued, "Take a look at all of the people listed on the National Park Service permit for the January 6 rally that led to the attack on the Capitol. It should be concerning that FEC reports show the Trump Campaign, at some point, paid over $2.7 MILLION to people who helped organize Jan. 6!"

Waters also said there needs to be an investigation into "who funded the January 6 rally, who helped pay to bus people into Washington, D.C., the role of shell companies, and so much more."

She added, "If Republicans have nothing to hide, then let’s investigate and follow the money through a January 6 Commission now!"

Trump's campaign has denied involvement in the Capitol riot. The House voted to impeach Trump on the charge of “incitement of insurrection” just one week after the riot. He was acquitted in the Senate.

A Senate report published earlier this month outlined the security failures leading up to the events but did not examine Trump's role in the events, as IJR reported .

A Senate committee aide told reporters, “Did we look at Trump’s role in the attack? The answer is no.”

Senate Republicans blocked a bill to establish an independent commission to investigate the insurrection. Still, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said last week that House Democrats will proceed with an investigation.

“We can’t wait any longer. We will proceed,” Pelosi said.

She added, "Whether we have a commission today, tomorrow or the next day over in the Senate, or not, the work of the committees will be very important in what we’re seeking for the American people — the truth."
