Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) is advising critics of police officers to “call a methhead” the next time they are in trouble.

During a Fox News interview on Monday evening, Kennedy suggested most Americans do not believe the majority of police officers are racist and those that do should not look to them for help when they need it.

“I’ve said it before, if you hate cops just because they’re cops, feel free to call a criminal, call a methhead the next time you get in trouble,” Kennedy said.

He added, “I just do not accept, nor do I think most Americans accept, that most cops are bad people, or racist. They don’t get up every day and go into work hoping they can hurt somebody. Most of them get up every day and hope they can themselves come back home alive.”

Watch Kennedy’s interview below:

The senator noted police officers “have about 60 million encounters with Americans every year” and argued when someone is injured an investigation should occur before making assumptions.

Kennedy continued by explaining “propositions” he believes “reflect common sense.”

He claimed, “Most cops, many of whom happen to be Black, do not get up every day and go to work hoping for the opportunity to hurt a person of color.”

The second proposition Kennedy brought up is “cops are necessary,” adding, “If you support defunding the police, you have tested positive for stupid.”

Arguing it is “immeasurably foolish to resist arrest,” Kennedy continued, “It is going to end badly even if no one is hurt.”

The final proposition he suggested was a personal one, “If you are a cop and you see someone about to stab me, I would personally appreciate it if you would stop them. Shoot them if you have to, I don’t care who they are.”

In the midst of recent police shootings, some lawmakers have called for defunding the police, including Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), and Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO), according to Fox News.
