Rep. Stacey Plaskett (D-Virgin Islands) is blasting Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-Wis.) after he claimed Black Lives Matter “doesn’t like the old-fashioned family.”
During a House debate over President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package on Wednesday, Grothman expressed his frustration with “the increase in the earned income tax credit for single people,” arguing it is a “marriage penalty.”
“I bring it up because I know the strength that Black Lives Matter had in this last election. I know it’s a group that it doesn’t like the old-fashioned family. I’m disturbed that we have another program here in which we’re increasing the marriage penalty,” Grothman said.
Plaskett took her place at the podium and proceeded to ask Grothman, “How dare you?”
She continued, “How dare do you say Black Lives Matter, Black people do not understand old-fashioned family?”

Plaskett argued, “We have been able to keep our families alive for over 400 years and the assault on our families could not have black lives or not even have black families.”
She called Grothman’s claim “outrageous” and suggested it should be “stricken down.”
Plaskett then focused on the relief package and explained how she feels it will help all Americans.
“I was going to talk about the American Rescue Plan, we know that this is going to provide relief to not only Black lives, Black Americans, but all Americans that we are interested in children and in their welfare and at this time I yield back,” she concluded.
The House passed the legislation on Wednesday.
