Former President Donald Trump is not holding back on his criticism of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) just three days after the Senate acquitted him on the charge of inciting an insurrection.

“The Republican Party can never again be respected or strong with political ‘leaders’ like Sen. Mitch McConnell at its helm… Mitch is a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack, and if Republican Senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again,” Trump said in a statement on Tuesday.

He added, “He will never do what needs to be done, or what is right for our Country. Where necessary and appropriate, I will back primary rivals who espouse Making America Great Again and our policy of America First. We want brilliant, strong, thoughtful, and compassionate leadership.”

Trump suggested without him, McConnell would have never won his election.

“McConnell would have lost, and lost badly. Now, his numbers are lower than ever before, he is destroying the Republican side of the Senate, and in doing so, seriously hurting our Country,” the former president continued.

He accused McConnell of “doing nothing” about the “election disaster in Georgia.”

“[He] will never do what needs to be done in order to secure a fair and just electoral system into the future. He doesn’t have what it takes, never did, and never will,” Trump said.

McConnell voted to acquit Trump on Saturday but said he was “practically and morally responsible” for the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, as IJR reported.

He weighed in on what Trump’s role will be for the party in the future during an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

“I don’t rule out the prospect that he may well be supporting good candidates. I’m not assuming that, to the extent the former president wants to continue to be involved, he won’t be a constructive part of the process,” McConnell said.
