House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) is blasting House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) for suggesting certain House Democrats should be punished for comments they made before taking office.
During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet The Press,” Schiff was asked if he is concerned that House Republicans would seek to punish Democrats over past controversial comments after the chamber voted to strip Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) of her committee assignments over her comments she made before entering Congress.
“Kevin McCarthy stands for nothing except the perpetuation of his own position. He has no values, and in my view, cares about little except for hoping to be speaker one day,” Schiff said on Sunday.
He went on to defend the decision to punish Greene by stripping her of her committee assignments.
“If members of either party are threatening violence against other members of the body and suggesting they should be executed, if they are casting doubt on 9/11 or school shootings, if they heckling victims of crime […] if they’re suggesting a religious group is shooting laser beams to start forest fires, they should be expelled from their committees whatever party they’re in. They shouldn’t frankly even be in the Congress.”

The House voted on Thursday to strip Greene of her committee assignments due to her apparent endorsement of violence against prominent Democrats, adherence to conspiracy theories, and openly questioning whether deadly school shootings occurred.
Before the vote, McCarthy said he hopes Congressional Democrats hold to what he said is a standard of punishing members of Congress for comments they made before taking office.
“Because we have a long list you can work within your own,” he said.
