Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) is urging his party to distance itself from freshman Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and denounce her insensitive comments.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Romney said, “We should have nothing to do with Marjorie Taylor Greene. We should repudiate the things she said and move away from her.

He continued, “Our long history as a party has shown we should separate ourselves from people in the wacky weeds.”

“If we don’t, then our opposition tries to brand us with their image and with their point of view, which has been detrimental to any party that doesn’t do that,” he added.

The Georgia Congresswoman has previously claimed that deadly school shootings did not happen and has espoused other wild conspiracy theories. Additionally, CNN reported that in the years before she entered office, she appeared to support killing prominent Democrats.

Greene’s comments have led to an uproar with Democrats calling for her to be expelled from Congress or at least removed from her committee assignments.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) blasted Greene in a statement for her “loony lies and conspiracy theories,” which he said are a “cancer for the Republican Party and our country.”

“Somebody who’s suggested that perhaps no airplane hit the Pentagon on 9/11, that horrifying school shootings were pre-staged, and that the Clintons crashed JFK Jr.’s airplane is not living in reality,” he said, adding, “This has nothing to do with the challenges facing American families or the robust debates on substance that can strengthen our party.”

Romney has previously criticized Greene as he wrote in a tweet, “Lies of a feather flock together: Marjorie Taylor Greene’s nonsense and the ‘big lie’ of a stolen election.”

Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) also encouraged Republican leaders “to stand up and say it is totally unacceptable.”

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is expected to meet with Greene to discuss her controversial remarks.

However, House Democrats are threatening that they will vote to strip Greene of her committee assignments if Republicans do not meet their deadline to do so.
