Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) is arguing Donald Trump was more interested in the perks of being president than fulfilling his role as the leader of the United States.

Christie told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos Trump had “great pride whenever you would go to the White House. No matter how many times I’d been there over the last four years in showing you different new things he was doing or he had gotten… was giving away, everything from the Oval Office to the bathroom off the Oval Office.”

He added, “He’d talk to you how he made that better too. I mean, so he loved the trappings of the office and I think in many ways loved the trappings of the office more most days than he loved the job itself.”

Stephanopoulos suggested Trump, up until the certification of the electoral results, believed there was a possibility he could remain president.

Christie explained, “There was part of him that knew it was over and he would have those moments and then the other dominant part of him was that he believed from his whole life experience, that if he said it enough and he willed it, he could will it into existence.”

Christie stressed the “weakness” of the president during those times was he surrounded himself with “the very worst” individuals.

He said those individuals just told Trump “what he wanted to hear.”

Trump delivered his final address as president as he left the White House on Wednesday morning for the last time, as IJR previously reported.

“You are amazing people, this is a great, great country,” Trump said at Joint Base Andrews. “It is my greatest honor and privilege to have been your president.”

He told his supporters he would “always fight” for them.

Trump proceeded to wish the Biden administration “great luck and great success.”
