The scientific journal “Nature” is telling Americans Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is the nation’s best bet after President Donald Trump has repeatedly undermined science related to the coronavirus pandemic and climate change.

“No US president in recent history has so relentlessly attacked and undermined so many valuable institutions, from science agencies to the media, the courts, the Department of Justice — and even the electoral system,” the publication wrote.

It added, “Trump claims to put ‘America First.’ But in his response to the pandemic, Trump has put himself first, not America.”

The authors note Trump has pulled out of scientific and environmental agreements and organizations including the 2015 Paris climate accord, Iran nuclear deal, United Nations’ science and education agency UNESCO, and the World Health Organization (WHO).

“Joe Biden, Trump’s opponent in next month’s presidential election, is the nation’s best hope to begin to repair this damage to science and the truth — by virtue of his policies and his leadership record in office, as a former vice-president and as a senator,” the editorial board wrote.

“Nature” argued Trump failed to create a national plan to increase testing and contact tracing.

They claimed Trump refused to acknowledge guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding masks and social distancing.

The publication accused Trump of lying about the dangers of the coronavirus and encouraging Americans to protest policies designed to slow the spread.

According to the writers, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has “withered” under Trump.

“The Trump administration’s actions are accelerating climate change, razing wilderness, fouling air and killing more wildlife — as well as people,” they wrote.

The publication went on to stress Trump promotes nationalism, isolationism and xenophobia.

The journal turned its attention to Biden and recognized he has plans to respond to the coronavirus outbreak and climate change.

It urged voters to choose Biden to lead the nation through these challenges.

“Joe Biden must be given an opportunity to restore trust in truth, in evidence, in science and in other institutions of democracy, heal a divided nation, and begin the urgent task of rebuilding the United States’ reputation in the world,” the editorial said.
