House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) believes that President Donald Trump won the first debate against Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. However, he does have some advice for the president ahead of the next debate.
“My best advice is, let Joe Biden talk,” McCarthy told reporters on Thursday. “He is the Democratic party. His ideas are far long gone. I think the more he talks, the more the American public would decide they don’t want Joe Biden.”
“Is there a reason why he puts a lid on almost most of his days? Is there a reason why he is hidden and not communicating? Is there a reason why he won’t tell the American public who he’d appoint to the Supreme Court Justice?” he continued.
When asked if McCarthy thought Trump’s strategy of interrupting Biden was a mistake, he said, “I don’t know if it’s a mistake or not, but I’d let him speak all he wants.”
“Every time Joe Biden … and maybe that’s why the campaign puts a lid on about every … what they do? In the two weeks prior, half of all the days were put a lid on by 10 a.m. Joe Biden usually gets in trouble not by somebody asking a question, but just by his talking,” he said.
Additionally, he encouraged the president to focus on Biden’s decades in Congress and his policy positions.
Finally, he said the president should focus on his accomplishments over the past four years.

McCarthy’s comments followed the first presidential debate, which has been widely panned as a “trainwreck.”
Several polls have found that viewers say they believe Biden did better during the debate than Trump. However, Trump claimed on Wednesday that, “By every measure, we won the debate easily last night.”
“We won the debate by almost every poll that I saw. If you look at the various polls — I looked at about six of them. We won every one of them,” he added.
