Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) acknowledged Louis DeJoy, Postmaster General for the United States Postal Service (USPS), is taking steps in the right direction but believes it is ultimately not enough.

On Tuesday, DeJoy announced he would place all operational changes on hold until after the November election.

Pelosi issued a statement commending DeJoy for making the right decision but recognized there is still work to be done.

“Postmaster General DeJoy’s announcement of what may be a temporary pause in operational changes delaying the mail is a necessary but insufficient first step in ending the President’s election sabotage campaign,” Pelosi said.

She added, “This pause only halts a limited number of the Postmaster’s changes, does not reverse damage already done, and alone is not enough to ensure voters will not be disenfranchised by the President this fall.”

Despite DeJoy’s move to pause operational changes, Pelosi indicated Democrats will still be moving ahead with legislation to prevent DeJoy from making further changes.

The ‘Delivering for America Act,’ put forth by the House Oversight Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), will prohibit the Postal Service from making “any changes to operations or level of service it had in place on January 1, 2020” and will provide $25 billion in funding to support the agency.

According to Pelosi, the same level of funding is “recommended by the USPS Board of Governors, which is 100 percent composed of Trump appointees.”

Pelosi noted Democrats will be demanding answers from DeJoy during his testimony before the Democratic-led House Oversight Committee on Monday.

He will be testifying alongside USPS Board of Governors Chairman Robert Duncan.

DeJoy will also testify before the Republican-led Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Friday.

“During a pandemic, the Postal Service is Election Central.  No one should be forced to choose between their health and their vote,” Pelosi said.
