House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is weighing in on Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s decision to tap Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) as his vice presidential pick.

During an interview on MSNBC, the top Democratic lawmaker praised Biden for his selection.

According to Pelosi, the selection is significant not only because of Harris’ gender and race but also because of her professional experience and career qualifications.

“Kamala Harris is not only the choice as a woman of color, she is the best person Joe Biden could name,” Pelosi said. “There are many people who would do no harm. There are many people who could be president. But to have those two combined with the person he had the comfort level with to serve it’s about governance.”

Describing Harris as “the best possible person” Biden could have selected, Pelosi also urged people to focus on Harris’ attributes as opposed to the color of her skin.

She continued, “Let’s recognize her not only as the first woman of color to be vice president but the best possible person he could have chosen to proceed into this election and, of course, to win and serve the American people.”

See Pelosi’s remarks below:

Of the great array of women leaders considered for Vice President, many would do no harm; many could be President. Pelosi’s latest remarks come less than one day after Biden’s announcement. On Tuesday, Biden’s highly anticipated decision sparked a media firestorm and an array of reactions from both sides of the political spectrum.

Like Pelosi, many other Democratic lawmakers have rallied behind the Biden-Harris ticket expressing confidence in their ability to win the general election this fall.

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) were among those who took to Twitter with their reactions to Harris being selected.

I'm proud to call @KamalaHarris my dear friend and sister—and next year, I'll be even more proud to call her our Vice President.

This is history. Kamala is a trailblazer who will serve this country well as the first Black and Asian American woman on a major party's ticket. pic.twitter.com/zUlL2TXkJ3

Here’s what I’ve learned about my friend Kamala over the past 4 years:

She’s got great instincts, and she trusts them.

When she makes a promise, she keeps it.

Friendship and family matter to her more than almost anything.

If you’re in a fight, you want her in your foxhole.

Harris has also made it clear she is ready to “get to work,” tweeting, “We are in a battle for the soul of this nation. But together, it’s a battle we can win.”

Harris’ first public appearance with Biden will be Wednesday afternoon in Delaware.
