White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany made a promise to reporters as she took the podium Friday afternoon to hold her first official press briefing.

A reporter pointed out it had been more than 100 days since a press secretary held an official briefing.

She asked McEnany if she plans to continue to hold these briefings on a daily basis and if she will promise the media she will never lie to them.

“I will never lie to you, you have my word on that,” McEnany said. “As to the timing of the briefings, we do plan to do them. I will announce timing of that forthcoming but we do plan to continue these.”

McEnany stepped into the role of press secretary following Stephanie Grisham’s departure. She returned to the East Wing as the first lady’s chief of staff and spokesperson, as IJR previously reported.

Grisham succeeded Sarah Huckabee Sanders in 2019 as press secretary and held the position for less than a year.

McEnany came to President Donald Trump’s defense recently after he received backlash for suggesting disinfectant and light injections as potential coronavirus treatments, as IJR previously reported.

“President Trump has repeatedly said that Americans should consult with medical doctors regarding coronavirus treatment, a point that he emphasized again during yesterday’s briefing,” McEnany said.

She added, “Leave it to the media to irresponsibly take President Trump out of context and run with negative headlines.”

McEnany’s first press briefing comes as the coronavirus pandemic continues to wreak havoc on the nation.

As of Friday afternoon, there are more than 1,000,000 confirmed coronavirus cases in the United States and over 64,000 deaths.
