As U.S. crude oil futures turned negative for the first time in history, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) celebrated the news and said the time is right to implement the Green New Deal.

In a now-deleted tweet about the news of the oil prices, Ocasio-Cortez said, “You absolutely love to see it.”

She continued, “This, along with record low-interest rates, means it’s the right time for a worker-led, mass investment in green infrastructure to save our planet. *cough*.”

Ocasio-Cortez quickly deleted that tweet and replaced it with another one that left out the “you absolutely love to see it.”

“Now is the time to create millions of good jobs building out the infrastructure and clean energy necessary to save our planet for future generations,” She said in a new tweet, adding, “For our economy, our planet, and our future, we need a [Green New Deal.]”

For our economy, our planet, and our future, we need a #GreenNewDeal.

Later, she argued that the collapse in oil prices is “a key opportunity.”

“Fossil fuels are in long-term structural decline. This along w/ low interest rates means it‘s the right time to create millions of jobs transitioning to renewable and clean energy. A key opportunity.”

This snapshot is being acknowledged as a turning point in the climate movement.

Oil prices in the U.S. plunged on Monday amid weeks of decreased demand for oil as Americans stayed home due to stay-at-home orders aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus.
