One day after being admitted to a hospital for the coronavirus, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been transferred to the hospital’s intensive care unit after his condition got worse.

“Over the course of this afternoon, the condition of the Prime Minister has worsened, and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital,” a spokesperson said on Monday.

Johnson’s spokesperson noted that the prime minister had asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to “deputise for him where necessary.”

Johnson went to the hospital ten days after announcing that he had been diagnosed with the coronavirus, as IJR has previously reported.

“On the advice of his doctor, the Prime Minister has tonight been admitted to hospital for tests. This is a precautionary step, as the Prime Minister continues to have persistent symptoms of coronavirus ten days after testing positive for the virus,” a statement said on Sunday.

“All Americans are praying for him,” President Donald Trump said on Sunday regarding news of Johnson’s hospitalization.

“He’s a friend of mine, he’s a great gentleman and a great leader, and as you know he went to the hospital today … I’m sure he is going to be fine, he’s a strong man, a strong person,” he added.

On Monday morning, Johnson tweeted, “Last night, on the advice of my doctor, I went into hospital for some routine tests as I’m still experiencing coronavirus symptoms.”

“I’m in good spirits and keeping in touch with my team as we work together to fight this virus and keep everyone safe,” he added.

Additionally, he urged people to stay home and thanked the medical workers who were caring for him.

News of Johnson’s move to the ICU comes as there are 1,331,032 confirmed cases of the coronavirus around the world.
